Rethink the Average Mirror (with a roundup of our new favorites)
Mirrors are often the ‘best friend’ roll in the romantic comedy. They typically aren’t the star, but at times can shine and standout. For designers they are extremely useful because they can make a space feel bigger, and they can make a wall feel addressed without costing as much as art. But the traditional rectangle above the mantel has lately acquired some competition. First it was the ’round’ which has become pervasive (of which we still love) but there are some new hot shots in town that you should consider. Yes, folks this is me telling you to ‘Rethink the Mirror’.
First off mirrors of massive scale either hanging or leaning are an extremely high impact way of addressing a wall and bringing in light, but are still way less than a piece of art.
We are going to get a couple for the office, custom-made.
If going the custom route isn’t your thing then think about different shapes or colors, and major retailers are killing it these days with affordable options.
A non-square, rectangle, oval or circular mirror can make a space feel more modern, edgy and fresh.
A smoked, amber or pink mirror can do a lot more to a room or vignette than the traditional because it has more visual weight and can work with your color palette.
It looks more intentional and designed, and becomes more of an art piece than a vanity piece.
We rounded up all our favorite special mirrors on the interweb for you. So the next time you are considering a mirror for your home ask yourself, Could this be the time I bring in something more interesting or more stylish? Forgo buying the ‘statement starburst and hit one of these up instead. They are more modern, edgy and yet many of them are still timeless (the simpler the frame the more timeless it will be).
Here you go, folks. These may not be great for eye-liner, but they sure are nice on the eye ….
